Summary
Mosquitoland, by David Arnold, is a thought-provoking story about Mary Iris Malone, a 16-year-old who is, as she believes, not okay. On September 1, Mary, otherwise known as Mim, sets out an adventure to Cleveland, Ohio, in an effort to see her sick mother. Unfortunately, however, the journey is not easy, with Mim traveling 947 miles, all while keeping her dad and stepmom in the dark. If that wasn’t hard enough, Mim also faces bizarre impediments, such as a crash, creep, and killer. Luckily, not everything is bad, with Mim making strong connections and even finding a love interest along the way. Throughout this novel, Mim additionally reflects on her thoughts, emotions, and past experiences, telling the reader of her struggles and explaining why her journey is necessary.Review by Yusef Aboukhatwa
Overall, Mosquitoland is one of my favorite books. Unlike other novels that I have read, its message is fresh, explaining that, in life, there is not just gray or black and white. Instead, there is gray, black, and white, all working together. Nevertheless, the novel tackled an excessive number of emotional components and should have been more grounded. Moreover, the story incorporated an excessive number of bizarre impediments, to the point where it became quite ridiculous and took away from Mim’s relatability. Some elements and writing of the book were also confusing. Regardless, I am going to have to give Mosquitoland a solid 7.5/10 and highly recommend this book to those who are coming-of-age fans.
