Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas is a funny, exhilarating story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The story is set in the fictional country of Adarlan and follows Celaena Sardothien, an 18-year-old assassin suffering in the Salt Mines of Endovier after being betrayed by her former assassin comrades. Then she was given a proposition. A deal that if she fought as the King's Champion for 6 years then she would be given her freedom. But there was a catch, even she, Adarlan's most notorious assassin, knew that. In order to prove her worthiness to become the King's Champion, she must defeat her 23 other competitors in a tournament, both knights and murderers alike. The prospect of her being free overruled any doubts in her mind. She accepted the proposition.
At the royal castle where the tournament will be held, one of the competitors has already fallen. Competitors must train everyday, adhering to a very rigorous regimen, and participate in a outrageous Test every week with the other competitors until the tournament begins. The ones who perform worst in the Tests get sent back to whatever punishment they were subject to beforehand. However, this competitor died the night before the Test, body mutilated as if it had been torn to pieces by a vicious beast. As more competitors start turning up dead, Celaena's situation escalates from a friendly competition to a game of survival. But she has power in the castle. She's befriended the princess of a rebel country, taken the heart of the Crown Prince, and grabbed hold of the reliable Captain of the Guard. She will survive and obtain her freedom, she must. However, soon she will realize it won't be as easy as she thinks. Beware the enemy lurking in the darkness, as well as the ones in front of you. Beware of betrayal, for backstabbers will always be in your blind spot.
I really enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it to fans of fantasy, mystery, and adventure novels. I would also recommend it if your just wanting to read a funny book. The plot was very elaborate, and no page was wasted in furthering it. Their was always a new unexpected situation befalling Celaena and her personality and bratty remarks always make for a good laugh. The drama between Celaena, Chaol, and Dorian was especially amusing. Dorian and Chaol are childhood friends, and their friendly banter never gets old. I especially like how despite Celaena going through so many difficult and sad experiences in the events leading to this book, she still acts like an immature, arrogant teen living her new dangerous life in the castle. As the story progresses and her new castle-life becomes more dangerous, her character develops to become a bit more mature and confident.
A certain part of the book I really liked was when Celaena plays a heart-wrenching piece on the piano and Dorian walks into her room after hearing the music. The conversation that follows gives the reader a lot of insight into Celaena's past and Dorian's teasing nature. Plus, this scene is lays groundwork for the following drama between Celaena and Dorian.
All things considered, I thought this book was a great start to the six book series, which I will definitely read in the future. I most definitely give this book an astounding 5/5 stars. So, if you like a good fantasy book and need a good laugh, I believe you will enjoy Throne of Glass.
