Daughter of the Deep by Rick Riordan

SUMMARY

Daughter of the Deep centers around an orphan girl named Ana Dakkar. At the beginning of the book, House Dolphin Prefect Ana's freshman year at Harding-Pencroft Academy is nearing its end. Her family has been attending Harding-Pencroft Academy for generations, yet why won't anyone tell her how her parents died? These thoughts race through her head as she, along with the rest of the freshman class, prepares to undergo a weekend-long trial at sea. Little does she and the rest of her class know; this trial would change their lives forever. Cold wars with old rivalries, new technologies decades ahead of our time, and life-changing secrets covered up by the academy itself. With no academy left, will Ana be able to survive this unprecedented situation? In a race against old enemies, Ana will form amazing friendships and make astounding discoveries about her heritage as she puts her leadership skills to the test for the first time.

REVIEW

I really liked this story. It was a bit different than most of Rick Riordan's works, but it was equally as enjoyable. When reading this book, I was reminded of the joy I felt when first reading his Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. I like how his writing style and this book's intricate plot kept me reading and never bored. I especially liked how this wasn't one of his usual books incorporating gods and mythology. He has written so many of those that he was even dubbed storyteller of the gods, so it was a good idea that he did something else. One thing I really liked about this book is Ana and Gemini's conversations close to the beginning of the book and the overall Jules Verne and Captain Nemo explanations in the novel. Overall, this book is definitely one of my favorites out of all Rick Riordan's books and one of the top 10 books I have read. This book is definitely a nine and a half out of ten and I would definitely recommend it to all ages. Since this book is new, I recommend either buying it directly or waiting a while until it is available from the library. To those who are interested in this book, I hope you enjoy it!

  1. Hey! This book seems really interesting! I read the first couple Percy Jackson books, and I was not a fan. I am intrigued how you say that it is different from the previous works. The main character seems like she has a lot to hide, and that interests me.

    Nice review!

  2. Awesome review! I am a major fan of Percy Jackson, but I am interested in the new style of Rick Riordan. I loved the summary that you gave and I will have to add this to my list of books to read reading that you didn't have any complaints about this book. I do have one question however: is this a series or just one book? Overall great job on the review!

  3. Good work Max. I can see that there is much more of a deeper meaning in the story with Ana's parents and the way you write the summary makes me want to read this book. I like how you connect this book with other books you've read with the same author. It tells me that I can rely on your review to be exemplary.

  4. Great review! I don't read mythological novels in general, as that area of fiction always confuses me, but this review was clear in how the book discussed the adventures of two characters navigating Riordan's world.

  5. Very Interesting.
I just finished a Series by Rick Riordan over Winter break (Spoiler: blog post coming on it). I read through the Percy Jackson series in 6th grade and it had me hooked, so I have always been interested in Riordan since then. I didn't know this book existed, so thank you Max!
