Run for It by Marcelo D'Salete

Summary

Brazilian slavery from the 1500s to the 1800s is the main theme of Run for It, which was authored by Marcelo D’Salete. This graphic novel centers around the struggles and resistance of black slaves and follows four relatively distinct stories. The collective narratives make for an extremely quick read. As for the content itself, the four stories are definitely saddening, although not entirely shocking when considering the knowledge our class hopefully has on slave history. The first part follows the emotional story of a slave’s romance and escape. The second is a depressing story of a mother whose child was murdered, and the third and the fourth follow rebellion and freedom. With these monochromatic tales, the reader may better understand the horrid and passionate struggles of slaves.

Review by Yusef Aboukhatwa

Overall, I would say that Run for It is a decent read. Its stories are short yet not rushed. The plots of each narrative are interesting, despite being somewhat predictable or underwhelming. The tales are also different enough so that they don’t feel redundant. In addition, the monochromatic drawings and artistic style are a fascinating choice but nothing special. For me, this novel deserves a 4.5/10. I would recommend it to those who like to read about slavery, as well as to those who just want an extremely short read.

  1. Good, concise review Yusef. This book sounds super interesting- I'm a big fan of graphic novels and I feel like the struggles and emotions of slaves can be conveyed vividly through pictures. I enjoy short stories because I feel like I have a pretty short attention span, so I might pick this book up.

  2. This was a nice and concise review! You did a great job getting your main points across, and the book sounds really interesting. I'm not usually a huge fan of graphic novels, but I could definitely see how they would do a good job depicting the stories of these slaves. Good job!

  4. Great review Yusef. Slavery was a huge issue back then and these stories are a great way of learning about America's past. Graphic Novels in my opinion are the best types of books, as they are the more fun ones to read. Reading with drawings can help a lot when trying to process information. It helps you visualize what it was like for black ameriacns back then.
